Launching the GlobalChild Project – the development of a comprehensive child rights monitoring platform.
Friday, August 26, 09:00 – 16:45
The Fairmont Hotel, Leduc Room
133 9th Avenue Southwest, Calgary
GlobalChild is a comprehensive child rights monitoring platform that will facilitate and support the ability of signatory Sates to comply with their obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). GlobalChild, an initiative of the University of Victoria, is under the leadership of Dr. Ziba Vaghri in collaboration with 7 Canadian and 4 international universities.
Canada was instrumental in the development of the CRC, playing an active role in the development and early drafts of the Convention. It was one of the first States to ratify the Convention and in 1990 it hosted the World Summit for Children to promote the Convention to the other governments of the world. In recent years, Canada has lagged behind in meeting its obligations under the CRC. GlobalChild will be able to assist Canada by providing a harmonized, accessible and analytical reporting structure, based on an indicators framework.
The event will launch this 5-year project funded by the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR) and the Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR)
